Episode 12 - Beyond Good Ideas

In this episode Jake and Brett talk about how we can often read or hear so many life changing truths but often we don’t really let them change us. The goal is to assimilate simple truths into daily living and to get beyond acknowledging good ideas and do what’s necessary to allow the truth to transform our hearts.

Key Points:

  • There is a big difference between acknowledging truth and having truth rooted in our hearts

  • The parable of the sower is one of Jesus’ teachings on the need for His word to take deep root within us (Matthew 13:1-23)

  • Memorization is a good first step to integrating a scripture or spiritual truth

  • We can filter our lives through a simple truth

  • The Gospels are one of the best place to go to encounter the person of Jesus

  • Three steps to integrating an good idea are: 1) memorize the truth, 2) think about how the truth might apply to your life, 3) don’t move on to another truth until the present one is deeply rooted

  • Lingering with the truth fights against a scarcity mentality

  • 10 minutes of bad does not define you

  • The goal is to assimilate simple truths into daily living

  • Rooting truth into our heart and life is a part of discipleship

  • Mastering some set of principles is not the way. Discipleship (following Jesus) is the way.

  • Jesus always acted perfectly, but he didn’t follow a memorized script. Jesus always had one ear to the Father.

Discussion Questions:

  • What struck you in this episode?

  • What are a couple good ideas or powerful truths that you’ve acknowledged but maybe haven’t assimilated?

  • How would you life be different if you integrated and lived by one of those truths?

  • What’s holding you back from letting the truth take root in your heart?

Resources:

  • “About this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food; for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:11-14)

  • Rules for Hermits (scroll through for the English translations)

  • “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it’s been found difficult and left untried.” (G.K. Chesterton)

  • “The really good news for humanity is that Jesus is now taking students in the master class of life.” (Dallas Willard)
